Accreditation and certification are separate checks.

A college’s accreditation does not automatically tell you whether its surgical technology program has the accreditation you need. Check the program name and campus, then check the certification route you plan to use.

The school, the program, and the exam

Institutional accreditation applies to the school as a whole. Programmatic accreditation applies to a particular training program. ARC/STSA reviews surgical technology programs and recommends accreditation to CAAHEP.

CST: NBSTSA lists graduation from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited surgical technology program as an eligibility route for new graduates. NBSTSA makes the final eligibility decision.

TS-C: NCCT has separate education and experience pathways. Check its current requirements and whether employers and state rules accept that route for the job you want.

Eligibility lets you apply for an exam; it does not promise a passing score or a job. Before choosing a school, read actual job postings in your area and check your state’s requirements.

How we evaluate programs and handle corrections

A percentage means little without its year, student count, and definition. The same goes for tuition: comparing one school’s base tuition with another’s full cost can make a program look cheaper than it is.

These are the weights planned for a future ranking. Scores remain withheld while we check comparable evidence across the programs.

Accreditation & certification eligibility25%
Tuition & total cost20%
Labs & clinical training20%
Placement & career support15%
Reputation, exams & graduate outcomes10%
Duration & flexibility5%
Price transparency & accessibility5%

Missing information will be labeled as an open question, not counted as a failing result. School-reported outcomes will stay clearly identified, and any future score must explain its evidence, coverage, and calculation.

Editorial and corrections policy

No school may buy a ranking position or a higher score. Any sponsorship or commercial relationship will be disclosed. If a figure is wrong or out of date, send the school name, the statement, and an official supporting document through our about/contact page. Corrections should include the source and review date.

What about the “worst” surgical tech schools?

Students deserve clear warnings when a program has documented problems. But a high price, private ownership, online coursework, or an unpublished outcome is not enough to call a school bad.

This review does not yet support a national worst-school list. It does identify questions worth pursuing: large residency price differences, older outcome reports, incomplete cost estimates, and exam or employment results that need more context. Those concerns appear in the school notes above.

Slow down if a school cannot explain its certification route, clinical placement plan, or total bill. Ask for the documents before committing money.

A few things to clear up before applying.

Can I become a surgical tech entirely online?

Some classroom coursework may be online. You still need practical skills training and supervised clinical experience. Ask exactly where labs and rotations happen, who arranges them, and how much travel is involved.

Does an accredited college automatically qualify me for the CST exam?

No. Check the surgical technology program’s accreditation and the current NBSTSA eligibility rules. The college’s general accreditation is not enough to establish program eligibility.

How do I compare programs with different lengths?

Count the time from where you are now to graduation, including prerequisites and admission waits. Then check whether the lab and clinical schedule fits your work and family commitments.

Is the cheapest program the best value?

Compare the full cost with the training you receive, the certification route, and recent graduate outcomes. A nearby program may also reduce travel and living expenses, but every budget is different.

Why aren’t these schools ranked from 1 to 13?

The available figures use different years, definitions, and cost categories. We need to resolve those gaps before a numbered ranking would be fair. For now, use the comparison to build a shortlist and ask better questions.

Where these details come from.

The original research reviewed official program, accreditor, and certification pages on October 27, 2026. School links appear in the table and profiles. Published outcome figures are institutional reports, not independently audited results. This guide covers a selected sample of programs; it is not a complete national survey.

Cost sheets, outcomes, and accreditation references
Programs outside this comparison and remaining research

Community College of Philadelphia, Broome Community College, Manchester Community College, Middlesex Community College, Trenholm State, Portland Community College, and Wenatchee Valley College remain research leads. Their current accreditation, costs, clinical arrangements, and outcomes were not checked for this review, so they are not ranked or characterized negatively.

Valencia College’s associate-program listing reviewed for the original draft did not include surgical technology. Carolinas College of Health Sciences’ 2025–26 catalog states that its program closed, with the last class graduating in May 2018. Neither is included as a current program here.

Before a national ranking is published, the research must cover at least 15 current candidates using the same checklist, confirm exact program accreditation, reconcile cost and outcome definitions, and check applicable state requirements. Affordable, accelerated, regional, and other category rankings also remain pending.

Program costs, schedules, accreditation, and requirements can change. Confirm the details for your campus and start date before applying or paying a deposit.

Take these six questions to admissions.

Ask for written answers. You should be able to compare schools without relying on a sales conversation.

01

What will I actually pay?

Request tuition, mandatory fees, books, uniforms, health clearances, exam fees, and clinical travel costs. Make sure the estimate uses your residency status.

02

Which certification can I pursue?

Ask which exam the exact program prepares you for, then check the certifying organization’s eligibility rules yourself.

03

Who arranges my clinical placement?

Find out where rotations happen, how sites are assigned, what supervision you receive, and what happens if a placement is delayed.

04

Can I make the schedule work?

Include prerequisites, lab days, clinical shifts, travel, and any waiting period. Online classes do not make operating-room training remote.

05

What happened to recent graduates?

Ask for completion, exam, and employment results with dates and student counts. Find out whether “placement” includes continuing education.

06

What if my plans change?

Read the withdrawal, refund, financing, and reimbursement terms. Ask what you would owe if you leave the program or cannot meet a work commitment.

Check the jobs before you choose the school.

Look at openings where you want to work. Check the certifications employers ask for, the experience they expect, and whether they hire new graduates.
