What Night Shift Actually Pays
Base pay for a night shift CST tracks the same market as day shift; the differential is what separates the two. Differentials are set per facility, not per region, so the same certification can be worth meaningfully more at a Level I trauma center running a full overnight team than at a community hospital covering call. Weekend nights usually stack a second differential on top.
The number that matters is your total hourly rate, not the posted base. Ask what the night differential is, whether it applies to the full shift or only hours after a cutoff, and whether call pay is separate. What Hiring Managers Screen For
Overnight teams are small, which changes what gets screened. A night shift manager is hiring for independent judgment first: can you open a case without a second tech to lean on, and can you flip a room at 3 a.m. without a supervisor in the building.
- Most facilities want at least a year of scrub experience before they will staff you overnight.
- Trauma and OB exposure reads strongly, because those are the cases that actually come in at night.
- Breadth beats depth. Overnight you cover whatever rolls through the door, not a single service line.
- Expect direct questions about how you handle a case with a surgeon you have never scrubbed with.

Do night shift surgical techs need a different certification?
No. The credential is the same CST, plus current BLS. What changes is the experience floor, since most hospitals will not put a new grad on an unsupervised overnight team.
Is the differential paid on top of overtime?
Usually the differential is added to base before overtime is calculated, which means overnight overtime pays more than day shift overtime at the same base. Confirm the specific calculation in writing before you accept.
Can I work night shift PRN instead of full time?
