Where Surgical Techs Work in Utah

Four systems account for most OR hiring in the state, and they are geographically stacked along one corridor, so changing employers rarely means changing your commute much.

Intermountain HealthStatewide

The dominant system in Utah. Primary Children's and Intermountain Medical Center anchor the Salt Lake metro, with regional facilities extending into Provo and Ogden.

University of Utah HealthAcademic

The state's academic medical center and Level I trauma program. Academic ORs generally run the broadest case mix and are the most structured about onboarding new grads out of clinicals.

MountainStar HealthcareHCA-Affiliated

Operates HCA-affiliated facilities across the Wasatch Front, staffing ORs in the Salt Lake, Ogden, and Provo markets.

CommonSpirit Holy CrossSalt Lake Metro

Rounds out the Salt Lake market as a fourth system option, alongside independent and ambulatory surgery centers across the corridor.

Two things follow from that map. First, techs here can move between a system, an academic center, and an HCA facility without relocating, which is unusual and worth using as leverage. Second, if you want ASC rather than hospital work, the surgery centers cluster in the same corridor rather than in the rural counties.

Surgical Tech Salaries in Utah

BLS reports a Utah mean of $61,610 and a median of $59,230, which sits close to the national median for surgical technologists. Entry-level techs start near $41,610, and experienced techs reach roughly $81,480 at the 90th percentile.

That $40k spread is the number to pay attention to. It is not seniority alone; it tracks setting, call coverage, and specialty. Cardiovascular, neuro, and trauma cases pay above general OR because the bench is thin, and call pay is where the top of that range actually gets built. Run your own numbers with the surgical tech salary estimator or see the specialty pay breakdown.

Certification and Programs

Utah does not mandate licensure, but that is close to a technicality here: Intermountain Health and University of Utah Health both treat CST certification as a standard hiring expectation, so the practical requirement is the same. Accredited programs (CAAHEP or ABHES) run 12 to 24 months, with Salt Lake Community College as the primary in-state pathway and clinical placements at Wasatch Front system facilities. Full detail lives in the CST certification guide and the state requirements page.

Utah Surgical Tech FAQ

Do I need a license to work as a surgical tech in Utah?

No. Utah has no mandatory licensure requirement for surgical technologists. In practice, the major systems expect CST certification, so an uncertified applicant is competing at a disadvantage regardless of what the statute requires.

Can a new grad get hired in Salt Lake City?

Yes, and the academic center is usually the better first target. Teaching hospitals are generally structured to onboard techs straight out of clinicals, while community and ASC hiring managers screen harder for prior case experience because they have less bench to absorb a ramp-up.

Which Utah employer pays the most?

Base pay across the major systems tends to cluster. The separation comes from specialty and call: a CVOR or neuro tech taking call will out-earn a general OR tech at the same system and the same tenure.

Is Utah a good market for travel or PRN work?

The corridor's density helps. Four systems and a cluster of surgery centers inside one metro means PRN shifts are reachable without long drives, which is not true in most Mountain West states.
