Read a Market Before You Apply to It
Four variables separate one metro from another, and only the first one shows up on a job board. Understand them before you compare two offers in two cities and conclude the bigger number is the better job.
The counterintuitive one, and the one candidates get wrong most often: the tightest labor market is rarely the best-paying one. A facility that cannot fill a seat is frequently a facility whose budget is why. What a shortage reliably buys you is movement on sign-on, relocation, and call pay, not on the base band. Run the number for a specific market with the salary estimator rather than reasoning from a national median.
Sun Belt Growth Markets
Sustained facility expansion and population inflow. Consistently high posting volume, generally moderate cost of living, and the best pay-to-cost ratio in the country for most techs. If you are early in your career and geographically flexible, start here.
High-Scale Coastal and Major Metros
The highest posted pay scales in the country, paired with the deepest applicant pools and the highest cost of living. Excellent case variety and academic medical centers. Negotiate against the local number, never the national one, and price the housing before you price the offer.
Midwest and Mid-Atlantic Systems
Large integrated health systems, strong trauma and teaching presence, and cost of living that makes a mid-range offer go further than a coastal one. The most underrated group on this page for a tech building case volume in the first five years.
