Collaborates with the RN circulator or designee to set up the operating room according to procedural requirements and surgeon preferences. Assists with gowning and gloving of sterile team members and performs surgical hand antisepsis using proper technique. Verifies the integrity and sterility of instrument trays, supply packages, and equipment; prepares and organizes sterile instruments, supplies, and hemostatic agents, ensuring functionality and maintaining an organized, efficient sterile field, including patient draping.
Actively participates in the surgical “time-out” and performs baseline and ongoing surgical counts with the RN circulator, reconciling all counts according to policy to prevent retained surgical items. Anticipates surgeon and procedural needs, efficiently passes instruments and supplies, and manages sterile supplies during procedures. Ensures proper handling and safety of sharps and immediately recognizes and addresses any breaks in sterile technique, notifying the RN circulator of any items placed within the patient.
Communicates medication amounts administered on the sterile field for documentation and manages surgical specimens according to established protocols. Assists with repositioning patients, equipment adjustments, and patient transport as needed, including preparation of lines for fluids and contrast media on the sterile field.
Performs point-of-use cleaning, terminal room cleanup, and proper care, cleaning, and disinfection of instruments and equipment in accordance with infection control standards. Maintains the highest standards of sterile technique while demonstrating excellent customer service and professional communication at all times.
