Hours:

Variable Typical shift start times are between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM.

Variable call weekend rotation dependent on the number of surgical techs on staff.

Position Objective

The Surgical Technologist is a member of the Operating Room and Endoscopy Unit. The position assists surgeons and other surgical staff during procedures. The Technologist works under the supervision of a surgeon, registered nurse, or other surgical personnel and maintains constant vigilance for the maintenance of the sterile field to maximize patient safety. The position ensures that the operating room environment is safe and needed equipment is available. The Surgical Technologist assists in the sterile processing department by performing sterilizing, assembly and storage of medical supplies and surgical equipment.  

Essential Responsibilities

Preoperative Responsibilities
  • Prepare the operating room for surgical procedures by:
    • Performing room setup according to procedure and surgeon preference
    • Ensuring all required instruments, supplies, and equipment are available and functional
  • Verify sterility, integrity, and expiration dates of supplies and instruments
  • Perform surgical hand scrub, don sterile attire, and maintain aseptic technique
  • Assist with patient positioning, skin preparation, and draping
  • Anticipate surgical needs based on procedure, surgeon preference, and patient condition

Intraoperative (Scrub) Responsibilities
  • Maintain a sterile field throughout the surgical procedure
  • Pass instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies accurately and efficiently
  • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs to ensure smooth procedural flow
  • Assist with:
    • Retraction
    • Suctioning
    • Handling of specimens
  • Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating nurse
  • Identify and correct breaks in sterile technique immediately
  • Operate and troubleshoot sterile equipment as needed

Postoperative Responsibilities
  • Assist with wound closure and application of dressings
  • Participate in final surgical counts and reconciliation
  • Safely handle and label specimens according to policy
  • Prepare instruments for decontamination and reprocessing
  • Assist with room turnover for subsequent procedures

Patient Safety and Infection Prevention
  • Adhere to:
    • AST Guidelines
    • Infection prevention protocols
    • Universal precautions
  • Maintain vigilance for patient safety concerns during procedures
  • Report equipment malfunctions or safety hazards promptly
  • Support surgical time‑outs and verification processes
  • Equipment and Supply Management
  • Ensure proper use, care, and handling of surgical instruments and equipment
  • Identify missing, damaged, or malfunctioning equipment
  • Assist with inventory control and case cart accuracy
  • Communicate supply needs to appropriate personnel

Communication and Teamwork
  • Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and support staff
  • Communicate clearly and professionally in a high‑stress environment
  • Respond appropriately to emergent situations
  • Demonstrate situational awareness throughout procedures

Documentation and Compliance
  • Document counts, specimens, and required procedural data as assigned
  • Follow organizational policies, regulatory standards, and scope of practice
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives


Required Qualifications

  • Surgical Technologist Certification 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a similar role
  • Associate degree in the field of surgical technology

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Mentor and orient new staff members
  • May supervise Student Scrub Technicians

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

Strong knowledge of current operating room techniques, procedures, instruments, and supplies
